Required tools

  • Round paintbrush, 5 cm in diameter

  • Wide paint brush

  • A few soft synthetic sponges

Execution steps: mouldings

  • Using the paintbrush, apply two coats of Salamander A213-12.

  • Using the wide paintbrush, apply a generous coat of Pearlescent Deep Gold over the length of the mouldings.

  • Before the Pearlescent Deep Gold begins to dry, use a soft sponge to smooth the surface of the mouldings and remove any excess paint. Run a level surface of the sponge over the raised areas of the moulding, and wipe the Pearlescent Deep Gold lengthwise. Continue wiping until you achieve the desired antique effect.

  • In order to get invisible joints, reduce the quantity of paint at the ends of the mouldings.

Tips to facilitate the treatment of the mouldings

  • Keep on hand a number of dry and damp sponges so you can replace those that get saturated with paint.

  • The antique effect is more interesting when the incuse (hollow) areas of the moulding are filled with paint and the raised areas show the base colour.

  • It is easier to achieve the antique effect before the mouldings are installed to the wall. This way, it is possible to smooth out the paint without worrying about corner joints.

  • If the mouldings you wish to "antique" are already installed and form the inside of a coffered ceiling, for example, it will be easier to smooth out the Pearlescent if you mask the end of the moulding that forms the corner that does not need to be painted. This calls for more work, but the corners will be more aesthetically pleasing.
