Bronzed fireplace
Required tools:
-
Paintbrushes, varying widths (depending on widths of mouldings)
-
Sponges, soft, small-celled
-
Damp rag
-
Pail of water
-
Fresh-paint masking tape
The base
-
Apply two coats of Mead B119-10 on the mouldings. Let dry at least 6 hours between coats.
-
Mask the outside contour of the mouldings to protect surfaces on which you don't want to apply patina.
The antique effect
-
Use a wide paintbrush to apply a generous coat of Pearlescent Deep Gold over the entire length of the mouldings.
-
Before the Pearlescent Deep Gold begins to dry, use a sponge to smooth out the surface of the mouldings and remove as much as possible of the Pearlescent. To do that, run a flat surface of the sponge over the raised part of the moulding in a regular lengthwise movement to wipe off the Pearlescent. Keep wiping until you achieve the antique effect you want. In order to make joints invisible, it's important to reduce the amount of colour on the ends of the mouldings.
Tips
-
Keep a supply of dry and damp sponges at hand so you can change if the one you're using becomes saturated with Pearlescent.
-
The antique effect becomes more interesting when the low parts of the mouldings are filled with Pearlescent while the raised parts set off the base colour.
-
You'll find it easier to do the mouldings before they are mounted on the walls because you'll be able to smooth them out without worrying about the corners.
