Graining (Dry cloth)

The unique, misty atmosphere created with this technique produces a striking new look for your room, obtained by combining ARTIFICE Pearlescent's iridescent finish with tone-on-tone colour. Add a personal touch by incorporating the graining technique with the stripe technique for a breathtaking effect.

Step 1 —Preparation

  • If necessary, use TSP to remove grease from surface for better paint adhesion.

  • Patch all holes and remove all peeling paint.

  • New surfaces that have never been previously painted should be primed with Prime Time Duo Primer sealer/Undercoater 1140-05.

Step 2 — Base Colour

  • Using a roller, apply a Paint Café-approved velvet finish latex paint  #C119-20 "Summer Linen" on the entire surface, as a base colour.

  • Allow to dry 6 to 8 hours.

  • Be sure to test colours, techniques and textures on a practice board first to obtain your desired effect.

Step 3 — Masking

  • Using a ruler and a pencil, mark vertical bands of different sizes, depending on the desired effect.

  • Apply narrow masking tape for wet paint on the outside borders of the bands you wish to paint.

  • Press tape down firmly to prevent paint from running under the edges.

Step 4 — Bands

  • Using a roller, randomly apply two coats of velvet finish latex paint #B205-42 "Captain's Code" on a few of the vertical stripes.

  • It is important to keep the pattern random (and not repetitive, i.e.: don't do every third stripe dark). This will create a random striping on the wall, with both the new darker stripes and stripes in the lighter base colour.

  • Allow to dry 6 to 8 hours.

Step 5 — Graining

  • This step requires a little imagination. The purpose is to add interest to the walls by applying different semi-transparent Pearlescent and glaze finishes over the various stripes you have completed in step 4. When applied in a randomly striped pattern over the existing stripes, the glazes will create additional stripe colours and add depth and interest to the finish, in a unique tone-on-tone effect. You will see how the base colours are slightly altered by overlaying different Pearlescent glazes. Again, it is important to keep the pattern random and not repetitive.

  • The number of glazes you create here are optional. Remember, the more glazes you create, the more variety you will have in your random striping -- for a magical tone-on-tone effect. We have used 3 different glazes for this example.

  • In separate plastic containers, prepare 3 different glazes. Blend 3 parts MASCARADE Glaze with:

    1. one part Pearlescent paint
       #8564-73 "Blue"
    2. one part Pearlescent paint
       #8564-70 "Opal"
    3. one part pearl finish latex paint
       #C203-12 "Denim"

  • Blend each mixture well. You may want to pour your mix into trays.

  • Using a 60 mm brush, apply one of your tinted glazes in a downward direction over a random stripe, until it is completely covered. Be sure to start at the top of the wall, pull the brush down, and work smoothly until you obtain an even coating with your desired depth of colour.

  • Continue to apply your assorted glazes (in a random manner) until all of the stripes are covered. You can also overlay the various glazes over each other, to create entirely new variations in colour. (Remember, the colour of glaze you choose to lay over each stripe is at your discretion. Refer to your practice boards if you need direction.)

  • Remove masking tape as soon as your work is finished.

  • Allow to dry 6 to 8 hours.

Step 6 —Finishing Texture

  • This last step will blend in the stark dividing lines that are revealed when the masking tape is removed from between the stripes.

  • In a plastic container, prepare a new glaze by blending 3 parts MASCARADE Glaze to one part velvet finish latex paint  #C119-20 "Summer Linen". You may want to pour your mix into a paint tray.

  • Using a 60mm brush, apply this last glaze to the formerly masked areas, again, in a downward motion. It is okay to overlap slightly on the neighbouring stripe, as this will achieve a more blended, unified look.

  • Immediately after (while glaze is still wet) take a dry cloth and gently rag the latest glaze application to blend it into the adjoining stripe.

  • You can repeat this process on all of the newly revealed lines from the masking tape, or just a select few - again, it is at your discretion.

  • Allow to dry 6 to 8 hours.
