  • DuroTec Polyurethane Oil Varnish 8557-12, Glossy Finish,

  • or DuroTec Floor Crystane Latex Varnish 8556-12, Glossy finish.

Note: The quantity of varnish depends on the dimensions of the floor because, ideally, the entire floor should be varnished after the wind rose has been painted.

Required tools

  • Ruler

  • Carpenter's square

  • Lead pencil

  • Good quality masking tape that will not leave traces of glue after it's been removed.

  • Utility knife

  • Artist's paintbrush, 5 mm

  • Paintbrush, 5 cm

  • Damp rag

  • Compass  (to determine north bearing)

  • Steel wool

Step 1 — Preparation

  • Clean the surface thoroughly if necessary.

Step 2 — Masking

  • Use the compass to get a northern bearing an determine the exact location of the wind rose.

  • Use the lead pencil, the ruler and the square to trace the contours of the 16 points of the wind rose (Make a pattern for a quarter of the rose).

  • Mask the outside contours of the wind rose.

  • Use the steel wool to lightly sand the interior of the rose. Be careful: sandpaper could damage the masking tape.

  • Mask all the surfaces you need to protect in such a way as to display only those surfaces you wish to paint in the same colour.

Step 3 — The rose

  • In order to create a tri-dimensional effect, we recommend you paint corresponding parts of  the points in the same colour. For example, those portions on the right-hand side could be painted in Captain's Code while those on the left-hand side could be painted in Denim. Use a paintbrush to apply a first coat on each of the parts that are ready to paint, and let dry until tack free.

  • Keep the masking tape and apply a thin coat of Pearlescent Illusio (Pearlescent Blue on Captain's Code and Opal on Linen and Denim) using a damp rag, then smooth out in the direction of the points in order to achieve a washed-out effect.

  • Repeat the masking steps in order to paint all 16 of the points, the main points –  N-S-E-W – being dominant in dark blue (Captain's Code), the NE-SE-SW-NW points dominant in light blue (Denim) and the last 8 dominant in Summer Linen.

  • Trace 4 squares at the ends of the N-S-E-W points aligning an angle of the square on a point of the rose.

  • Mask the exterior contours of the squares and apply a coat of colour on the inside (Captain's Code and Red Currant). Use a different colour, such as Red Currant, to set off the north point.

  • Use the artist's paintbrush to trace the letters N-S-E-W inside the squares in Deep Gold Illusio.

Tips:

We recommend you apply a coat of one of the following varnishes in order to protect the wind rose:

  • DuroTec Polyurethane Oil Varnish 8557-11, Velvet Finish,

  • DuroTec Polyurethane Oil Varnish 8557-12, Glossy Finish,

  • DuroTec Floor Crystane Latex Varnish 8556-12, Glossy finish.
