STENCIL Technique (Stencil Brush)
Stencil painting is a relatively simple technique which quickly adds an original touch to your room. By creating interest with patterns in borders, or in randomly placed emblems, you can enhance your interior and create your own personal touch. Similarly, you can pull a favourite symbol or emblem from existing fabric or accessories and you can achieve even more remarkable results by reproducing select patterns on your accessories, such as cushions, curtains or even furniture.

Step 1 Preparation
-
If necessary, use TSP to remove grease from surface for better paint adhesion. Patch all holes and remove all peeling paint. For new surfaces that have never been previously painted, prime with Prime Time Duo Primer sealer/Undercoater 1140-05.
Step 2 Base colour
-
On the bottom section of your wall (the wall can be divided into top and bottom by a chair rail), apply two coats of velvet finish latex paint #B203-42 "Dreamsleep", with a roller.
-
Allow to dry 6 to 8 hours.
-
On the top section, apply a first coat of DUNES Suede finish #B217-12 "Sunset Amber" using a short-nap roller. Work in 90 cm x 90 cm irregular areas. Begin by rolling a large "W", then fill in the square that would comprise the entire "W" shape and then repeat in next sections.
-
Allow to dry 6 to 8 hours.
-
Using a 100 mm brush, apply a second coat of Suede, in a series of overlapping X's and with random, irregular brush strokes. Work in sections diagonally.
-
Allow to dry 6 to 8 hours.
-
Be sure to test colours, techniques and texture on a practice board first to obtain your desired effect.
Step 3 Stencil painting
-
Create your own stencil by cutting desired patterns out of a semi-transparent acetate sheet or choose a pattern from those offered at your dealer's or local art supply store.
-
Accurately affix stencil to wall using stencil aerosol adhesive or masking tape.
-
In a foil or plastic plate, pour a small amount of velvet finish latex paint #B225-33 "Mountain Cranberry".
-
In a second plate, pour a small amount of your Suede paint in case you need to do some touch-ups over the stenciled patterns.
-
Lightly dip stencil brush into paint and remove excess from brush by blotting brush on the edge of plate.
-
Holding brush perpendicular to the surface, dab stencil cut-outs with light, quick strokes. We recommend not covering the pattern thickly or evenly, as a subdued, irregular finish will blend more appropriately with the base colour.
-
To make effect even more subtle, you can do touch-ups by lightly apply suede finish over the stenciled patterns.
-
Remove stencil and repeat the process throughout your room.
